Video Transcript

  • 0:01 | golf Central on YouTube is brought to
  • 0:03 | you by the new Chrome tour golf ball
  • 0:05 | from Callaway well we are just 100 days
  • 0:08 | away from the first day of golf
  • 0:10 | competition at the 2024 Summer Olympic
  • 0:13 | Games from Paris and you can see it all
  • 0:15 | right here on the NBC family of networks
  • 0:18 | the men’s golf competition will be
  • 0:20 | August 1st through the 4th and the
  • 0:22 | women’s will be August 7th through the
  • 0:24 | 10th and you can watch both on Golf
  • 0:27 | Channel and peacock so let’s take a look
  • 0:29 | at the current men standings as of right
  • 0:31 | now Zan Shuffle is in position to defend
  • 0:33 | his gold medal in Paris the US will
  • 0:35 | likely be represented by four men this
  • 0:37 | year the Olympic standings are based on
  • 0:39 | the world golf rankings as Scotty
  • 0:41 | Sheffer pretty much a guarantee to be in
  • 0:43 | France right now Windam Clark Shuffle
  • 0:45 | and Patrick KL also in the top four but
  • 0:48 | plenty of time for players like Max
  • 0:49 | Homer Brian Harmon and Colin morawa to
  • 0:52 | catch them and over on the women’s side
  • 0:54 | the us would get four players if they’re
  • 0:56 | all inside the top 15 of the world
  • 0:58 | rankings you got Nelly CER essentially a
  • 1:01 | lock at this point to qualify as is
  • 1:03 | Lilia Vu but there will be an
  • 1:05 | interesting battle for the last spots
  • 1:07 | looking at this over the next few months
  • 1:09 | currently occupied by Megan K and
  • 1:11 | Allison Lee and earlier today Damon hack
  • 1:13 | talked with Anthony scandin who’s the
  • 1:16 | executive director of the International
  • 1:18 | Golf Federation Anthony it is great to
  • 1:20 | visit with you what’s the excitement now
  • 1:22 | that we’re inside 100 days until Olympic
  • 1:25 | Golf competition
  • 1:26 | begins it’s um nervous excitement Dam
  • 1:29 | and thank thanks so much for having us
  • 1:30 | it’s um I count down the Thursdays until
  • 1:34 | the 1 of um of of of August when the men
  • 1:38 | The Men start te off at 9:00 a.m. we’re
  • 1:41 | 14 Thursdays away so that’s why there’s
  • 1:44 | excitement and a little bit of
  • 1:45 | nervousness as to how soon it is the
  • 1:48 | nerves I can understand the logistics of
  • 1:49 | running the men’s and women’s
  • 1:51 | competition must be immense what do the
  • 1:53 | final preparations look like between now
  • 1:56 | and then lots of meetings uh I just we
  • 1:59 | just came off a conference call with the
  • 2:01 | organizing committee to to get down to
  • 2:03 | the final details you know dotting the
  • 2:05 | eyes Crossing the te’s the the stuff
  • 2:07 | that you need to do to to make a good
  • 2:09 | game’s great so um it’s it’s that that F
  • 2:13 | minute detail that we’re doing and and
  • 2:15 | right now our agronomist is is at the
  • 2:19 | the golf course working with their team
  • 2:21 | and getting down to the the little
  • 2:23 | details of of preparation for the golf
  • 2:25 | course um so a lot of small things are
  • 2:29 | adding up to big things really between
  • 2:31 | now and games time I imagine those
  • 2:33 | details are are huge why is Olympic Golf
  • 2:35 | then so important for bringing maybe a
  • 2:37 | new fan base new people to the
  • 2:41 | sport well there’s lots of them uh we
  • 2:44 | our broadcast for the games that will
  • 2:47 | over a quarter of a billion um viewers
  • 2:51 | both in Tokyo and in Rio and most of
  • 2:53 | those viewers are new people to our
  • 2:55 | sport that about 60% normally don’t
  • 2:58 | watch golf it’s not and so
  • 3:00 | on top of that it’s a it’s a younger
  • 3:02 | more gender neutral equal numbers of men
  • 3:05 | and women watching the sport and as I
  • 3:07 | said among much younger audience for us
  • 3:09 | and so we’re using this as an
  • 3:11 | opportunity for our membership to to
  • 3:14 | after you know within that 3 week
  • 3:15 | four-week Halo period after the games to
  • 3:18 | capitalize on that opportunity to get
  • 3:20 | people into their golf clubs learning
  • 3:22 | how to play the sport and and trying to
  • 3:24 | convert you know some of these newer
  • 3:26 | fans interested fans into participants
  • 3:28 | and obviously long term fans to watch
  • 3:31 | your broadcast and other broadcasts of
  • 3:33 | of our athletes as they perform in in
  • 3:36 | the tours post post the Paris Olympics
  • 3:39 | well speaking of golf clubs the golf
  • 3:40 | National has hosted big time events
  • 3:43 | before in particular the 2018 Ryder Cup
  • 3:45 | how’s it setting up for the Olympics and
  • 3:47 | what will the TV viewing experience be
  • 3:49 | like for fans around the world
  • 3:52 | watching well I don’t think it’s going
  • 3:54 | to be as rough and P penal as the rough
  • 3:56 | as penal as it was for for 2018 there
  • 3:59 | was a bit of maybe you could say a bit
  • 4:01 | of a home team Advantage for setup there
  • 4:03 | what we’re trying to do is is show and
  • 4:06 | showcase our players to to to highlight
  • 4:09 | the skill sets that they have um to get
  • 4:12 | as many birdies and Eagles Etc as
  • 4:14 | possible and and and also to show as
  • 4:18 | we’ve done in both Rio and Tokyo
  • 4:20 | showcase the women’s game to show how
  • 4:23 | close they are to to the men in terms of
  • 4:25 | their scoring and and their
  • 4:26 | professionalism and and their skill sets
  • 4:29 | uh with a two tees um since um the um
  • 4:33 | the rer cup we have a tea now a new tea
  • 4:36 | on the ninth green and a new te on the
  • 4:38 | 17th team which will will um provide a
  • 4:42 | great opportunity for the women to to
  • 4:44 | show off their skills so um they’ll see
  • 4:47 | exciting golf they’ll see a golf course
  • 4:50 | in in in immac condition uh that that
  • 4:53 | enables our our players to to to perform
  • 4:57 | at their highest level and on top of
  • 4:59 | that I think
  • 5:00 | the beauty of the course will will
  • 5:02 | attract people to our sport I think it’s
  • 5:04 | a you know that the time you spend
  • 5:06 | playing golf and the Solitude and and
  • 5:08 | the friendships you gain from that time
  • 5:09 | you spend at the golf course I think
  • 5:11 | will also come out to the viewers well
  • 5:14 | Anthony speaking of the players there’s
  • 5:16 | some close races coming down the stretch
  • 5:17 | for qualifying for the games there
  • 5:19 | always are how important is it for the
  • 5:21 | igf to have a wide array of
  • 5:23 | nationalities represented in
  • 5:26 | Paris yeah it’s very important for two
  • 5:29 | things one one one is obvious the more
  • 5:32 | nationalities or national Olympic
  • 5:34 | committees that are participating the
  • 5:35 | more opportunity we have for our game to
  • 5:37 | be be viewed one of the unique things of
  • 5:40 | the Olympic Games is you know as I said
  • 5:42 | earlier the audience that that’s
  • 5:44 | attracted to watching our our our
  • 5:46 | broadcasts is a different one to week in
  • 5:48 | week out so what we try to do is balance
  • 5:51 | both the strength of the field with the
  • 5:53 | number of national Olympic committees or
  • 5:55 | national federations that are
  • 5:56 | participating and we do that using the
  • 5:59 | world golf rankings and and Li and
  • 6:01 | nuancing it we only have um 60 athletes
  • 6:04 | on the men’s and the women’s side that
  • 6:06 | are participating in these events of of
  • 6:08 | those 60 we limit the the number within
  • 6:12 | the top 15 to four countries so four
  • 6:14 | nationalities of the top players within
  • 6:17 | the 15 then outside that it’s two
  • 6:20 | nationalities um maximum per country um
  • 6:24 | with up until we fill the the 60
  • 6:26 | athletes or participants um so we
  • 6:29 | average out around 32 to 34 countries
  • 6:33 | both in the men’s and the women’s uh and
  • 6:35 | then some of those have two athletes
  • 6:37 | others don’t so around 40 OD 40 40 to 42
  • 6:41 | countries will be represented we think
  • 6:44 | um in Paris once we come to the final
  • 6:47 | entries so it’s a good diversity when
  • 6:49 | you consider um the number of athletes
  • 6:52 | that we have and that gives us obviously
  • 6:55 | that that wide breath of audience that
  • 6:56 | we’re seeking well you had two
  • 6:58 | impressive gold medalist in the last
  • 7:00 | playing in Tokyo how have Xander and
  • 7:02 | Nelly kind of helped metaphorically
  • 7:04 | carry the torch for Olympic
  • 7:07 | Golf I just by their example every day
  • 7:10 | um they’ve been fantastic ambassadors
  • 7:12 | for for the Olympic movement and for
  • 7:14 | golf Nelly right now is is equaling
  • 7:16 | records and um so her play is
  • 7:18 | exceptional her her conduct on on the
  • 7:20 | field of play on the golf course is
  • 7:22 | exceptional and outside that so both and
  • 7:25 | similarly with Xander Xander is the
  • 7:27 | number two ranked American at the moment
  • 7:29 | he’s playing
  • 7:30 | very well and I saw a fantastic
  • 7:33 | interview that that on Golf Channel that
  • 7:35 | you guys did with him during the Masters
  • 7:37 | where he’s just taking every round as it
  • 7:39 | come or every shot as it comes and and
  • 7:41 | hoping by the end of that to to qualify
  • 7:43 | back in in in June for for the Olympic
  • 7:46 | Games and it’ be F fantastic if we had
  • 7:49 | both of our defending gold medalists
  • 7:51 | there that was a great interview live
  • 7:53 | from the Masters when the games comes to
  • 7:55 | Los Angeles in 2028 Anthony that’s my
  • 7:58 | hometown hearing a lot about uh
  • 8:00 | potential for a mixed team event how
  • 8:02 | close is that to
  • 8:04 | happening well you’re right um yeah we
  • 8:07 | went to the players to to seek their
  • 8:09 | their thoughts on this and there was
  • 8:10 | great enthusiasm and support for it uh
  • 8:13 | anything for an extra gold medal and in
  • 8:15 | addition to the the two individuals we
  • 8:17 | have for the 72 whole stroke play so we’
  • 8:20 | put that suggestion to the I we’ve got
  • 8:23 | fantastic support from the organizing
  • 8:25 | Committee of La uh for this bid and we
  • 8:28 | we well the IC will make up a decision
  • 8:31 | on the the total event schedule or the
  • 8:34 | the number of um competitions that will
  • 8:36 | be held during the games towards the
  • 8:38 | beginning of next year so we’re hoping
  • 8:41 | um that momentum will build from that
  • 8:43 | incitement from the players and also
  • 8:45 | from the organizing committee for the IC
  • 8:47 | to take on board um adding a mixed team
  • 8:50 | event to the um to our program and we’re
  • 8:53 | really hopeful of that
  • 8:57 | [Music]

the Olympics will be considered just a show of no relevance if liv golf players are not representing their countries…
