It’s Almost Impossible To Strike Your Irons Without Doing This First [Video]

Video Description

Without knowing this you will find it almost impossible to consistently strike your irons. Here’s what you need to know ?

1. Easiest way to improve your strike is by a simple change to your set up. this takes just 5 seconds and is the fastest way I know to improve you ball striking and your golf swing.

2. The golf swing is a circle but if your circle is always changing your chances of hitting consistent iron shots is almost zero. In this video Danny Maude gives you such a simple drill to maintain your circle and therefore the consistency of your golf swing.

3. Finally, tension is a killer to your golf swing. If you can learn to remove tension you won’t just improve your strike but you will instantly hit the golf ball longer.

Here’s the Practice Plan for this video

ABOUT DANNY
———————–
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!

I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.

On YouTube and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.

Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble

I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

  • 0:00 | so you want to learn how to compress
  • 0:02 | your iron you want to learn how to
  • 0:03 | strike your ions more consistently let
  • 0:05 | me tell you you aren’t far aware in fact
  • 0:07 | in this video I’m going to show you
  • 0:09 | things that are working with my students
  • 0:10 | right now and they’re simple changes
  • 0:13 | that you can make to start to
  • 0:14 | consistently first of all strike your
  • 0:17 | irons okay then once we’ve got your
  • 0:19 | striking it I’ll then show you how you
  • 0:20 | start to amplify that distance that’s
  • 0:24 | exactly what we’re going to cover in
  • 0:25 | this week’s video now before I do that
  • 0:26 | if you’re new to a challenge from your
  • 0:27 | first lessons of mine please consider
  • 0:29 | subscribing I release videos just like
  • 0:31 | this one every single week to try and
  • 0:32 | help you improve your game plus you’ll
  • 0:35 | never have to remember a thing I always
  • 0:36 | put a free downloadable practice guide
  • 0:38 | in the description box below so here’s
  • 0:40 | the great thing there’s not a lot you
  • 0:41 | can be doing wrong that’s causing your
  • 0:43 | poor contact okay so you’ll by the time
  • 0:45 | we finish you could be absolutely fine
  • 0:47 | so here’s look here’s the golf swing
  • 0:50 | here’s the ACT there’s the club coming
  • 0:51 | down it gets to a lowest point and then
  • 0:54 | comes up again right now if you’re
  • 0:56 | striking it poorly what’s happening is
  • 0:58 | is that low point in this circle look
  • 1:00 | it’s just happening just behind the golf
  • 1:02 | ball if it’s too far behind you’ll start
  • 1:04 | to top it and thin it okay if it’s just
  • 1:06 | behind you’ll start to Fat it but if we
  • 1:09 | can start to shift that low point after
  • 1:11 | the golf ball so what happens is you
  • 1:13 | strike the ball and then then the ground
  • 1:15 | you will start to make solid contact so
  • 1:19 | how do you go about achieving that well
  • 1:20 | come and have a look at this
  • 1:23 | the first thing you’ve got to do is bake
  • 1:26 | in a solid strike in the setup so here’s
  • 1:30 | the simplest thing the very first thing
  • 1:32 | that you should do if you want to
  • 1:33 | improve your contact bake it into your
  • 1:36 | setup so we’ve said look the golf swing
  • 1:39 | is a circle yeah and with every Circle
  • 1:41 | there’s a lowest point to that Circle
  • 1:44 | and we’ve just said that needs to happen
  • 1:46 | after the golf ball
  • 1:48 | so how do you make sure that you make or
  • 1:50 | strike the ball first then the ground
  • 1:52 | well what can you do well if you put
  • 1:54 | your feet together and take I’ve got an
  • 1:56 | A10 in my hands here I’m going to take
  • 1:57 | even steps so that a Time middle middle
  • 2:00 | clubs middle stance now the second thing
  • 2:03 | I’m going to do I’m going to move my
  • 2:04 | handle now opposite my inside lead leg
  • 2:06 | here and then I’m going to grip the club
  • 2:08 | what’s that done well it’s produced an
  • 2:10 | angle offset look
  • 2:13 | from the maximum radius of the Swing so
  • 2:15 | this is where the low point of the Swing
  • 2:17 | is and what I’ve done is just gone
  • 2:19 | boom so now I’ve baked into my setup a
  • 2:22 | ball Turf contact straight away from
  • 2:24 | ball position and hand position right
  • 2:26 | the second thing I’d love you to do is
  • 2:29 | make sure that you have more weight
  • 2:30 | favoring your lead foot right because
  • 2:32 | great ball Strikers at the moment of
  • 2:34 | impact have more weight on the front
  • 2:37 | foot than they do when they’re open
  • 2:39 | Powerball Strikers but pole ball
  • 2:41 | Strikers have a lot more weight on their
  • 2:42 | back foot at the moment of impact so
  • 2:44 | just favoring that lead side gives you a
  • 2:47 | bit of a head start and finally at setup
  • 2:50 | make sure you have the middle part of
  • 2:53 | your hips and your shoulders right on
  • 2:56 | top of the ball like this at the start
  • 2:58 | on top of each other why because if this
  • 3:01 | is your center of your circle and
  • 3:02 | they’re on top of each other again look
  • 3:04 | it’s helping you control this circle and
  • 3:06 | strike the ball then the ground if I was
  • 3:09 | to kind of have this misaligned so my
  • 3:11 | middle of my shoulders are over here too
  • 3:13 | much I’m now going to start to
  • 3:15 | potentially start striking the ground
  • 3:16 | behind the golf ball and that’s going to
  • 3:18 | lead to your thin shots to bake simply
  • 3:20 | bake all of this a great strike into
  • 3:23 | setup and you’re going to be well on
  • 3:25 | your way to improving your strike so
  • 3:27 | let’s now hit a shot in this setup
  • 3:29 | position before we work on maybe some
  • 3:30 | issues with the swing so I’ve actually
  • 3:33 | scratched a line level with a golf ball
  • 3:35 | and you can do this as well on the golf
  • 3:38 | course because it’s going to help you
  • 3:39 | identify exactly where your Club is
  • 3:41 | striking the ground relative to the golf
  • 3:42 | ball it also gives you something to
  • 3:44 | practice often when I’m hitting do my
  • 3:46 | practice things I’m almost making sure I
  • 3:48 | look I maybe see a line there and
  • 3:50 | imagine I’m striking look after that
  • 3:52 | line so it gives you kind of a reference
  • 3:53 | point and something that you can do in
  • 3:55 | swing super super simple so get myself
  • 3:57 | set
  • 3:59 | over the ball
  • 4:03 | let’s have a look that’s a great strike
  • 4:05 | have a look at this look
  • 4:07 | so my club’s coming where’s the lowest
  • 4:09 | point in my divot look after the golf
  • 4:12 | ball here that is what we’re trying to
  • 4:14 | achieve it might possibly a fraction
  • 4:16 | steep for my for my liking but again the
  • 4:18 | wonderful feedback when I look at that
  • 4:21 | line right let’s now move on to step
  • 4:24 | number two so here’s something super
  • 4:26 | simple and this will help you maintain
  • 4:28 | the circle so a lot of people who do not
  • 4:31 | strike the ball very very well their
  • 4:33 | circle is always changing and it changes
  • 4:36 | because they pull the Rams in they lift
  • 4:39 | their arms up they’re all low basically
  • 4:40 | their arms are all over the place so how
  • 4:42 | do you create some consistency in the
  • 4:44 | circle because if you imagine if we can
  • 4:46 | create consistency in the circle the
  • 4:50 | more likelihood is we’re going to end up
  • 4:52 | with a consistent low point and strike
  • 4:54 | the golf ball so here’s something that I
  • 4:57 | give my students all the time just
  • 4:59 | imagine you get yourself set and just
  • 5:01 | imagine you’re trying to keep your arms
  • 5:03 | fairly close together okay not tight not
  • 5:06 | stiffer anything thing but fairly close
  • 5:08 | together on the way back and as you come
  • 5:10 | through a look we keep them fairly close
  • 5:12 | together on the way through now at some
  • 5:14 | stage in the swing of course your Trail
  • 5:16 | elbow is going to bend a little bit here
  • 5:17 | and on the way through look they’re
  • 5:19 | straight here but they’re going to bend
  • 5:21 | eventually so this is kind of almost a
  • 5:23 | feeling from about half swing to half
  • 5:26 | swing just imagine and keeping them
  • 5:28 | closer together and what it does is it
  • 5:30 | kind of looks after look the circle
  • 5:32 | because something now I’m not doing this
  • 5:34 | I’m not pulling the circle in just
  • 5:36 | keeping them fairly close together
  • 5:38 | maintains that Circle all the way back
  • 5:40 | and all the way through so I like to
  • 5:43 | work my students here on almost what
  • 5:45 | they feel is very short half swings
  • 5:48 | so we’re not spreading them apart
  • 5:50 | we’re just keeping them fairly close
  • 5:52 | together
  • 5:53 | and it looks something like that so we
  • 5:54 | practice just about here
  • 5:56 | to here
  • 5:58 | and to here look okay it really helps
  • 6:01 | them also to force their shoulders to
  • 6:04 | turn beautifully on a circle because a
  • 6:07 | lot of times when you’re playing you
  • 6:08 | start cheating you start lifting your
  • 6:09 | hands up and again it becomes a whole
  • 6:11 | very handsy and amsy swing versus look
  • 6:14 | when you’re forced to kind of keep the
  • 6:15 | um your arms closer together you’re now
  • 6:18 | forced to use my shoulders and move them
  • 6:19 | on a circle back and them on a circle on
  • 6:22 | the way through again it really really
  • 6:24 | helps with your consistency so very
  • 6:26 | simple visual that’s not complicated
  • 6:28 | whatsoever just imagine your arm staying
  • 6:30 | nice and close back
  • 6:32 | nice and close through and hey Presta
  • 6:34 | another beautiful strike look where a
  • 6:37 | finished look half swing arms nice and
  • 6:39 | close together and what do we see here
  • 6:40 | look coming up look at this
  • 6:42 | there’s the line
  • 6:44 | I’ve actually took that one better much
  • 6:46 | shallower differ by the way here but low
  • 6:48 | point is after the golf ball and hey
  • 6:50 | prester that is a wonderful way for you
  • 6:54 | to really improve the quality of your
  • 6:56 | contact okay now however however
  • 7:00 | I have given that drill to a number of
  • 7:03 | people
  • 7:04 | and it makes their swings look so much
  • 7:07 | better but there is an issue with it
  • 7:09 | okay in fact there’s an issue with any
  • 7:11 | form of tip
  • 7:13 | and that is tension
  • 7:15 | you see when I say to somebody just get
  • 7:18 | your arms a bit closer
  • 7:19 | they start to do this
  • 7:22 | I mean become this kind of wooden statue
  • 7:25 | so here’s something that I give my
  • 7:27 | students to kind of with any tip that
  • 7:29 | you try to reduce some of the tension in
  • 7:31 | your arms and shoulders to really help
  • 7:33 | your ball striking but also hugely your
  • 7:37 | distance so I’m going to grab Leo in
  • 7:38 | who’s on the camera right now to help me
  • 7:40 | out with this one so yeah always just
  • 7:42 | grab the end of this club okay okay so
  • 7:44 | all I’m going to do now is this try and
  • 7:46 | just just move me around
  • 7:49 | can you move my arms around no chance no
  • 7:51 | chance okay why because I’m so tense
  • 7:53 | here I gave this to a recent student and
  • 7:55 | the distance he hit after this little
  • 7:57 | just this one session was 40 yards of
  • 8:00 | designs now watch this
  • 8:03 | we’ll see that now yeah
  • 8:05 | can you pull it can you pull it out of
  • 8:06 | my hands no no so what does that mean
  • 8:10 | you’ve got a firm grip I’ve got a firm
  • 8:11 | grip still I’m holding it firmly but
  • 8:13 | look my arms my shoulders yeah are free
  • 8:16 | okay perfect cool you get on camera
  • 8:18 | again I need you okay right so
  • 8:22 | what we then do is sudden you’ve got
  • 8:24 | that sentence said get a friend to do
  • 8:26 | this with you because all of these
  • 8:28 | things here these keeping these arms
  • 8:29 | straight yes they want to be straight
  • 8:30 | and connected here like this a bit close
  • 8:32 | together I still want them look
  • 8:35 | flowing so I want those shoulders so
  • 8:37 | when you’re making this immersion don’t
  • 8:39 | make it stiff allow the club to flow
  • 8:42 | as you’re doing this and now I’ve used
  • 8:44 | you can use many images I’ve used an
  • 8:46 | image of almost like Olympic Hammer
  • 8:47 | thrower throwing the hammer out into the
  • 8:51 | distances here there’s many different
  • 8:53 | things you can do to try to make this as
  • 8:55 | relaxed and as flowing as possible but
  • 8:57 | that one is a beauty so a baked into
  • 8:59 | setup I’m ready I’m flowing on a keep
  • 9:02 | those arms very closely on the way back
  • 9:04 | all the way through and I’m really
  • 9:05 | visualizing this circle
  • 9:07 | moving ahead of that golf ball I’ve
  • 9:10 | drawn my line in here I might have a
  • 9:12 | practice swing when I hit there we go
  • 9:15 | hitting the head of the line this is a
  • 9:16 | great thing you can do on a golf course
  • 9:19 | but now I’m nice and relaxed too
  • 9:22 | and hopefully we get beautiful beautiful
  • 9:25 | contact
  • 9:28 | and that one was a little bit
  • 9:32 | actually heavy so what did I do there
  • 9:35 | well do you know what Cameron look at
  • 9:37 | this see I I for most people it’s a
  • 9:39 | pretty good strike it’s just struck that
  • 9:41 | a little bit heavy now why did I do that
  • 9:45 | basically I literally when I came down I
  • 9:48 | literally didn’t commit to this shot a
  • 9:51 | little bit tense on the way through so
  • 9:53 | watch the difference here I’m just going
  • 9:54 | to relax a little bit more on this next
  • 9:56 | one okay and bake it into setup and then
  • 9:59 | look
  • 10:01 | there we go much much more free I’m
  • 10:04 | talking to Canberra I was a little bit
  • 10:06 | tense and hey prester look now I’m good
  • 10:09 | so tension happens to the best of us so
  • 10:12 | I hope you enjoyed this video do me a
  • 10:14 | favor if you love this video and you
  • 10:16 | want to see me actually giving this to
  • 10:17 | an actual person it’s not really sure
  • 10:19 | but I’m going to put it right here but
  • 10:22 | this one here once you’ve got the
  • 10:24 | solidness a strike now you want some
  • 10:26 | more accuracy go and check this one out
  • 10:29 | if you’re new to the channel give it a
  • 10:30 | thumbs up maybe share it with one of
  • 10:32 | your friends and of course look there’s
  • 10:33 | a free download practice guide in the
  • 10:35 | description box below I’ll see you next
  • 10:37 | time cheers bye

Seems so simple Danny, but why can't I do it with any consistency?

I’m new to the channel and fairly new to golf… watching your videos over the last couple of days has taken me from hitting about 75 yards with a 4 iron to fairly consistently hitting 160+ (best of the day today was 200 yards total). You are an incredible teacher. Thank you!

I'm still wondering if some people just can't consistently hit a ball. Tried so many things and just can't get there.

It is early in the golf season here so the results of this video are not totally in. I will know more now that I reviewed this video a second time as my old swing flaws came back. If I can get back to where i was 3 weeks ago this video will have changed my golf game of 20 years. First time out this season with no range time I shot a 95 losing only one ball all day on a water shot. I packed an extra dozen expecting to lose most and shoot in the high 110's. First 2 weeks of after work golf league (9 holes) instead of shooting in the mid 50's shot a 42 and 43 with a few birdies on holes I have never done that before (your pitching video came into play). Last night I shot a 53 so I am reviewing this video then will see if I can reproduce the magic on the weekend. I will offer you a tip that I found useful about tension. Instead of telling students to relax the hands/grip ask them to relax the forearms. If you relax your forearms, you cannot grip the club too hard.

I am 76 years old, a 7 handicap, been as low as a 1 handicap when I was younger. I am pretty much self taught, read books back in the days before videos, then watched hundreds of instructional videos, and I have to say, Danny is the best and easiest instructor I have ever watch. Makes things understandable, easy to replicate, and makes perfect sense. Thanks so much!

Hi Danny I've been watching your videos for awhile now and have implemented some of your methods into my game. I found my driver is now going straight rather than slicing by simply moving the ball postion further back in my stance. Your video on watching where the ball goes really helped with that. Also this iron video has seriously helped with irons, they too are now straight.
We play a lot of executive courses with par 3's where I use irons off the tee, could you please do a short video on those, please? Thanks so much for all your help!!

The forward lean at address with an 8 iron. How do I maintain this setup as the ball moves forward/backward with shorter/longer irons? Struggling with solid contact with irons right now. Thanks
