  • 0:00 | Wide Technology Championship is being
  • 0:02 | played for the first time at the Tiger
  • 0:03 | Woods designed L cardal course which is
  • 0:06 | at the Damonte Resort in Cabo s Lucas
  • 0:08 | the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula
  • 0:10 | the course opened 9 years ago it tips
  • 0:12 | out at
  • 0:14 | 7,452 yards par 72 so everybody wants to
  • 0:18 | know what’s Tiger’s design philosophy
  • 0:21 | this course is going to remind people of
  • 0:23 | the old style California courses we will
  • 0:25 | use the existing ayal that Traverse the
  • 0:28 | site and well-placed bunkers to create
  • 0:30 | definite strategic choices and Carries
  • 0:33 | off the teas makes me nervous already I
  • 0:36 | set up the golf strategy to make golfers
  • 0:37 | think and make choices angles of
  • 0:40 | approach are going to be very important
  • 0:41 | and will dictate the type of shots you
  • 0:43 | should consider I love this kind of golf
  • 0:47 | says Tiger Woods and it’s interesting
  • 0:50 | you know we’ve seen players go from
  • 0:51 | players you know Ben khaw Jack Nicholas
  • 0:54 | Arnold Palmer who have gone on to the
  • 0:56 | design game what do you think of this
  • 0:58 | chapter that Tiger Woods is embarking on
  • 1:00 | because he was had some projects before
  • 1:01 | that were stalled by the global pandemic
  • 1:04 | and Global financial crisis as well yeah
  • 1:05 | you can go back quite a while in there
  • 1:06 | where tiger course has planned in in
  • 1:08 | various corners of the world all the way
  • 1:10 | out in Dubai even that never actually
  • 1:12 | quite got off the ground this was the
  • 1:14 | first course tiger ever designed I I
  • 1:16 | first went around this property when
  • 1:18 | there were just white staks out in the
  • 1:20 | the desert on a royos uh which I then
  • 1:23 | I’m quite familiar with on golf courses
  • 1:25 | as you know Damon and that was before
  • 1:27 | the course had even been cleared and
  • 1:29 | shaped and it was a very non-descript
  • 1:31 | piece of property and then to go back a
  • 1:33 | couple of years later and see the
  • 1:34 | finished product it’s always fun to see
  • 1:36 | the journey that of course takes from
  • 1:38 | just being dirt and cacti into a golf
  • 1:41 | course and it’s very much in the model
  • 1:43 | of of Resort course golf the the
  • 1:45 | fairways are pretty generous by Resort
  • 1:48 | standards and here’s tiger during the
  • 1:51 | development of the golf course there the
  • 1:52 | guy on the right Ken joui is the owner
  • 1:54 | of the property looks it pretty much
  • 1:57 | flows downhill towards the Pacific Ocean
  • 1:59 | with without quite getting there there
  • 2:01 | are stretches of it where it can be sort
  • 2:03 | of directionally a little bit repetitive
  • 2:05 | but there are some interesting holes out
  • 2:07 | there for sure and particularly around
  • 2:09 | the green complexes there’s a lot of
  • 2:10 | kind of runoff chipping areas as well I
  • 2:13 | would expect pretty low scores this week
  • 2:15 | there aren’t a lot of disasters waiting
  • 2:17 | out there unless like us you end up down
  • 2:20 | one of those ayos in between the rocks
  • 2:21 | in which case you’re pretty much
  • 2:23 | finished but it is a it’s a generous
  • 2:26 | golf course and when you’re taking the
  • 2:27 | best players in the world and putting
  • 2:28 | them out there you’re going to have to
  • 2:30 | really Sprint to keep Pace this week I
  • 2:32 | think I wonder what we’ll learn about
  • 2:34 | Tiger’s design philosophy I remember
  • 2:35 | speaking to not beay about how tiger
  • 2:38 | thinks on a golf course and how
  • 2:39 | different it is from even Tigers peers
  • 2:42 | he sees shots that other players other
  • 2:45 | great players just don’t see that they
  • 2:47 | don’t even fathom particular angles or
  • 2:51 | flights of shot or different ways to
  • 2:53 | approach different holes so I wonder if
  • 2:56 | any of that you know incredible mind
  • 2:58 | that tiger has displayed in his
  • 3:00 | incredible career will be visible in his
  • 3:03 | design work will we be able to see Ah
  • 3:05 | that’s that’s definitely a tiger shot I
  • 3:07 | couldn’t even have contemplated this
  • 3:09 | type of design well he he has likened
  • 3:11 | his design philosophy in the past to
  • 3:13 | those great old Southern California
  • 3:14 | courses the ravier Beller you’re not
  • 3:17 | going to see a lot of that at Damon
  • 3:19 | other than the fact that there are
  • 3:20 | little canyons and a royos that kind of
  • 3:23 | dictate uh strategy on a lot of the
  • 3:25 | holes but there are certainly enough
  • 3:26 | places where he gives you the
  • 3:28 | opportunity to bite off just enough to
  • 3:30 | choke on and ultimately that’s to me the
  • 3:33 | fundamental of good design in on any
  • 3:35 | golf course is what are the options is
  • 3:37 | there uh is there the option for the
  • 3:39 | safe play that then becomes
  • 3:40 | exponentially tougher as you work your
  • 3:42 | way around the hole or is there the hero
  • 3:44 | shot out there where you can execute it
  • 3:46 | or choke on it and there’s certainly hes
  • 3:48 | like that at Damonte it it will not be
  • 3:52 | considered it will not be likened to any
  • 3:54 | of those Southern California courses
  • 3:55 | simply because the property doesn’t
  • 3:56 | allow itself to be there but I’m I’m
  • 3:59 | sure sure he’s pretty proud of it it is
  • 4:01 | the first course that he’s ever had his
  • 4:02 | name on he’s currently building a second
  • 4:04 | ful length course at the same property
  • 4:06 | and he also built the Oasis course there
  • 4:08 | which is a little short uh part three
  • 4:10 | course that’s on the property so he
  • 4:12 | definitely has a pretty large footprint
  • 4:13 | where the tour is playing this week I do
  • 4:15 | wonder what his Des design philosophy
  • 4:16 | will be 10 20 years from now when he has
  • 4:19 | a portfolio perhaps we look at Ben
  • 4:21 | crenchaw one of the great minimalists in
  • 4:23 | my mind doesn’t move a lot of Earth you
  • 4:25 | know lets the land do what it was meant
  • 4:28 | to do some architects can be a little
  • 4:30 | bit heavy-handed a little bit more
  • 4:32 | contrived I wonder if tiger will be more
  • 4:34 | of the you know putting his imprint on
  • 4:36 | the golf course or being more of a
  • 4:37 | minimalist and letting the golf course
  • 4:39 | land kind of dictate how the holes come
  • 4:41 | to pass there there’s a distinct
  • 4:44 | correlation between the amount of work
  • 4:45 | tour players have done as designers and
  • 4:48 | the quality of the work crenchaw has
  • 4:50 | never done that much and I would argue
  • 4:52 | is the best Tour player turn designer in
  • 4:56 | in certainly that we’ve seen in recent
  • 4:58 | memory wise COV as a lot of Great
  • 5:00 | Courses as well but Jack Arie Gary
  • 5:03 | Player it was a mass Market approach it
  • 5:05 | was a very successful business for those
  • 5:08 | guys and certainly during the pre crash
  • 5:12 | era they were building a lot of golf
  • 5:14 | courses and frankly not a lot of good
  • 5:16 | ones in that mix as well they certainly
  • 5:18 | have their share of courses that people
  • 5:21 | can point to and say that is the best of
  • 5:22 | their work yes but when you are
  • 5:24 | stretched thin in in boom times then the
  • 5:27 | work certainly takes on a a
  • 5:30 | and tiger certainly not in that point at
  • 5:32 | this stage I’m not sure any architect
  • 5:33 | can get to that point in the current
  • 5:34 | market that we live in anymore but it’s
  • 5:37 | certainly be interesting to see if tiger
  • 5:39 | starts to get property that is really
  • 5:41 | good for golf and that that’s really the
  • 5:44 | trick for these guys are there enough
  • 5:46 | good pieces of land out there you can
  • 5:48 | put a great golf course on it because
  • 5:49 | they’re all good enough to put a good
  • 5:51 | golf course if they have enough
  • 5:52 | bulldozers on on lousy land but how can
  • 5:54 | they work with really good quality land
  • 5:57 | and that’s few and far between those
  • 5:59 | assignments that old restaurant saying
  • 6:01 | location location
  • 6:07 | location
