  • 0:00 | Tommy share with me and the audience
  • 0:02 | your top three short game tips I’d like
  • 0:05 | a chipping one yeah a bunker and a
  • 0:09 | putting yeah let’s go chipping first put
  • 0:11 | me on the spot but I was I was
  • 0:13 | semi-prepared with a chip when you said
  • 0:15 | I’ll have to do a chipping one um this
  • 0:17 | this is one that I quite like and it was
  • 0:18 | kind of how I um was taught to chip in a
  • 0:22 | way and so for me um I was taught that
  • 0:26 | you put
  • 0:28 | until you can’t put anymore so really I
  • 0:31 | could still put this but once you can’t
  • 0:32 | put and once it gets a bit too far for a
  • 0:34 | put or there’s a bit too much grass you
  • 0:36 | would carry on putting but you would
  • 0:37 | just add Loft okay so um for instance
  • 0:41 | I’ll do I’ll do it with a with a lob
  • 0:42 | wedge but um you know the first shot
  • 0:46 | here if I just put it with a a lob wedge
  • 0:50 | and and like belly wedge it that would
  • 0:52 | be a put and then the next thing I would
  • 0:55 | do if I had to Loft it did anybody get
  • 0:56 | that one that was that was a nice shot
  • 0:58 | um so there’s a couple of different
  • 1:00 | things maybe in setup but only my you
  • 1:02 | but I would carry on and just put this
  • 1:04 | one with Loft and then
  • 1:09 | um to go further into
  • 1:12 | that so my typical setup for a put with
  • 1:15 | loft or a chip would be very similar to
  • 1:17 | a put so the the ball would be just from
  • 1:19 | a setup
  • 1:21 | base ball would be sort of somewhere in
  • 1:24 | between the middle of my stance and my
  • 1:25 | left
  • 1:27 | heel and I would rest the club on my
  • 1:29 | left thigh
  • 1:32 | and then the rest of it then would be I
  • 1:34 | wouldn’t add wrists into it or anything
  • 1:35 | cuz I wouldn’t add wrists with my
  • 1:36 | putting stroke really unless it got
  • 1:38 | really long so so for you it’s it’s very
  • 1:40 | very similar to a putting stroke the
  • 1:42 | first yeah this is what I yeah so very
  • 1:44 | very similar where putting for me I know
  • 1:47 | I use the the saw grip but it’s very
  • 1:49 | arms and shoulders so if you just do the
  • 1:53 | same arms and shoulders there there’ll
  • 1:56 | be there’ll be certain differences when
  • 1:58 | when you chip but I try and make it as
  • 2:00 | similar as possible just for a minute
  • 2:02 | appreciate those three shots they’re
  • 2:05 | pretty special so then um so I would
  • 2:08 | spend a lot of time working on that
  • 2:09 | being really structured in your setup
  • 2:11 | and adding that you can even hit a put
  • 2:13 | first like I did and then walk into the
  • 2:15 | next ball and try and do exactly the
  • 2:17 | same but just hit a chip and then
  • 2:19 | onwards from that just as a simple dist
  • 2:22 | I would call it distance control for
  • 2:23 | chipping I would have three clubs so
  • 2:26 | here I’ve picked a a lob wedge a
  • 2:29 | pitching wedge in an eight
  • 2:31 | iron so all three will be a different
  • 2:33 | pace they’re going to land in a
  • 2:34 | different spot but there’ll be a
  • 2:35 | different pace so you can pick whichever
  • 2:37 | one you would normally chip with first
  • 2:39 | so if I went with a lob wedge here’s my
  • 2:41 | setup put with
  • 2:44 | Loft there’s my lob wedge shot and then
  • 2:47 | if I took a wedge out straight
  • 2:50 | away and I’m going to do the exact same
  • 2:52 | move but I know I can’t land it that far
  • 2:55 | so now I’ll just figure out what uh
  • 2:58 | there’s my setup just inside the left
  • 3:00 | heel
  • 3:03 | wedge and then
  • 3:07 | go and then finally I will do the exact
  • 3:10 | same thing with an a time and if you do
  • 3:12 | this to a bunch of different shots and
  • 3:13 | different distances you start gaining
  • 3:16 | The Loft is always the natural Loft on a
  • 3:18 | club and you’re never changing that
  • 3:19 | because you’re putting you’re doing the
  • 3:21 | putting stroke and then you will get a
  • 3:22 | feel by using different clubs you start
  • 3:24 | to get a feel with what you might prefer
  • 3:26 | to chip with how hard to it each chip
  • 3:28 | it’s only like hitting
  • 3:30 | three different shots with a wedge or 79
  • 3:32 | on a range really and you’re just doing
  • 3:33 | different things it’s just different
  • 3:34 | Landing spots so again there’s that
  • 3:37 | setup eight and I’ll probably maybe just
  • 3:39 | land on the green just
  • 3:42 | short oh just got a little it landed on
  • 3:44 | the collar didn’t it it landed on the
  • 3:46 | you got a uh a fringe boost a little
  • 3:48 | Fringe boost I’ll hit another maybe just
  • 3:51 | land it but again always being pretty
  • 3:53 | disciplined with my
  • 3:55 | setup I’ve gone for The Fringe boost
  • 3:57 | again but even doing that I would
  • 3:59 | realize I would get better at that shot
  • 4:00 | but realize 9’s not the right shot for
  • 4:02 | this one and then I know I’d use one of
  • 4:03 | the other two but that there nothing
  • 4:05 | really changes and I just find it a very
  • 4:07 | simple way of dialing in your chipping
  • 4:09 | while actually doing something that you
  • 4:10 | do all the time putting I love it
  • 4:13 | perfect on to the next shot BN
  • 4:19 | shot okay Tommy tip number two give us
  • 4:23 | your top tapes from the sand from in the
  • 4:25 | bunker okay uh well the first thing I’ll
  • 4:28 | do I umum I’m a big believer in having
  • 4:30 | like setup stations if you like uh that
  • 4:34 | are in the bunker but one thing couple
  • 4:36 | of things that I will talk about is just
  • 4:38 | understanding properly I think there’s
  • 4:39 | always um everybody talks a lot about
  • 4:42 | bunker it’s the you know one of the only
  • 4:44 | golf shots that you’re not going to hit
  • 4:45 | the golf ball you’re always hitting the
  • 4:47 | sand but people always ask where to hit
  • 4:49 | the sand um and this is uh what this is
  • 4:53 | how I set it up quite often so here’s
  • 4:55 | the ball that I’m going to hit now I’ll
  • 4:58 | put one ball directly behind IND it and
  • 5:01 | that will
  • 5:02 | be one strike Mark so like as a as a
  • 5:06 | general rule I’ll try and hit one golf
  • 5:08 | ball behind now while we stick on
  • 5:13 | setup I’m not trying to hit the golf
  • 5:15 | ball so every time you actually set up
  • 5:17 | to any other shot your ball position is
  • 5:20 | relative to actually trying to strike
  • 5:22 | the golf ball so if you’re on an iron or
  • 5:23 | a Chip Shot you’re actually hitting the
  • 5:25 | back of the ball and compressing down
  • 5:26 | after that whereas in the bunker you’re
  • 5:28 | trying to hit the sand so I want my left
  • 5:32 | heel on the line that I’m going to
  • 5:34 | strike and I want the club to actually
  • 5:37 | match that line and everything’s going
  • 5:40 | to try and return to there
  • 5:43 | so if you if you take if you take those
  • 5:45 | two things there’s the club on that line
  • 5:47 | there’s my left heel on that
  • 5:49 | line um Club face is variable open it
  • 5:53 | open it as much as you like I always
  • 5:55 | prefer if you’re going to do anything
  • 5:56 | open it more because we don’t want as
  • 5:58 | soon as the Leading Edge starts digging
  • 5:59 | into the sand and that’s where it’s
  • 6:01 | going to stop but anyway so there’s the
  • 6:03 | setup and then the weight one thing that
  • 6:06 | we want to do people people often I find
  • 6:09 | bounce the club off the sand so some
  • 6:13 | people dig too much with the Leading
  • 6:15 | Edge that would be wrong but also people
  • 6:17 | try and get it up and they feel like
  • 6:19 | when they hit the sand the club bounces
  • 6:20 | we want to be hitting
  • 6:22 | Down Down and Under the ball through
  • 6:25 | this through this area so there’s where
  • 6:27 | we’re going to make contact with the
  • 6:28 | sand but we’re also going
  • 6:30 | down at this point so we’re going to set
  • 6:33 | the weight nicely on that left side so
  • 6:35 | now all of a sudden I’ve got left heel
  • 6:38 | shaft and Mum they’re behind the ball
  • 6:42 | but they’re all on this Mark and they’re
  • 6:43 | all going to be ready to hit down to
  • 6:45 | there so from there let’s give the first
  • 6:47 | one a
  • 6:52 | go love that would you say with a little
  • 6:55 | bit behind the sand but would you say
  • 6:57 | with that Tommy cuz it was quite an
  • 6:58 | interesting point you made there in
  • 7:00 | relations between the Leading Edge going
  • 7:02 | down and players almost bottoming out
  • 7:05 | too early would you then say you’re
  • 7:07 | almost trying to get the back of the
  • 7:09 | golf club because you’ve laid it so open
  • 7:11 | are you almost getting the back of the
  • 7:12 | club to hit down yeah absolutely um
  • 7:16 | again that can be misconstrued because I
  • 7:17 | think sometimes people try and get the
  • 7:18 | back and they and the and and the club
  • 7:21 | bounces so they feel that they sort of
  • 7:24 | get flicky and behind San comes in here
  • 7:27 | and the back hits here and bounces where
  • 7:28 | again what you’re trying to do is get
  • 7:31 | under the ball and if you watch people
  • 7:34 | that have the Leading Edge the club this
  • 7:36 | sound’s actually quite light but the
  • 7:38 | club will struggle to get through it
  • 7:39 | enough if it’s not designed for that
  • 7:41 | it’s designed to get through grass not
  • 7:42 | heavy sand so you’re absolutely trying
  • 7:44 | to hit down with the back of the club
  • 7:47 | and try and get that smacking sound
  • 7:48 | there it is an interesting take as well
  • 7:50 | what what sort of acceleration are you
  • 7:52 | looking to take when you come to hit a
  • 7:54 | shot and obviously it varies on the
  • 7:56 | distance yeah it does and it’s it it’s
  • 7:59 | funny really because I um from an
  • 8:02 | individual standpoint I try and if I’m
  • 8:05 | ever working on my bunker player I try
  • 8:06 | and get the longest swing possible where
  • 8:08 | I actually feel like I don’t have to
  • 8:10 | accelerate through the ball because I
  • 8:12 | have energy in the back swing so the
  • 8:14 | club will fall but I’m always going to
  • 8:17 | be accelerating through but I would
  • 8:19 | never want you know um like short swing
  • 8:23 | and trying to force it out just even
  • 8:27 | though it might work sometimes is is uh
  • 8:29 | it might work as you is no good but like
  • 8:32 | I always like um Freddy Couples is a
  • 8:34 | great image for me I always thinking
  • 8:36 | he’ll be nice and long
  • 8:38 | and and I just feel like the club gets
  • 8:41 | under the under the ball more into the
  • 8:42 | sand and pops up that’s what I always
  • 8:44 | like I find like it’s very hard to get
  • 8:47 | it’s very hard from
  • 8:48 | here or shorter when you’re accelerating
  • 8:51 | to get any height on the ball and I
  • 8:53 | think Bunker
  • 8:54 | play there’s there’s nobody on the
  • 8:57 | planet that gets too much height bunker
  • 9:00 | like I just don’t have it so like for me
  • 9:02 | again I’m always a lot of this is based
  • 9:04 | on setup isn’t it yeah I’m a big like um
  • 9:08 | you know from when I’ve had lessons in
  • 9:10 | the past but chman said a great thing to
  • 9:12 | me where he said wants to set up grip or
  • 9:14 | takeaway WR the rest of the Swing you
  • 9:16 | spend trying to fix it you know get one
  • 9:18 | of those things right so and these are
  • 9:19 | things that require nothing it’s just a
  • 9:21 | bit of discipline and making sure you’re
  • 9:22 | on it so um you know and again always I
  • 9:27 | always like weight going this way just
  • 9:29 | because you’re always trying to hit down
  • 9:30 | into the
  • 9:33 | sand and that one went really nice and
  • 9:36 | in the air that one love it that is very
  • 9:39 | very good do you feel do you feel you’re
  • 9:41 | a strong bunker player I like bunkers
  • 9:43 | yeah um I like practicing in bunkers
  • 9:45 | because there’s so many different
  • 9:46 | there’s so many different things you can
  • 9:48 | do I mean there’s a number of different
  • 9:49 | lies but you can have it you know you
  • 9:51 | can have one teed up you can have one
  • 9:53 | you know plugged you can have an average
  • 9:55 | lie you can have all those lies on an up
  • 9:57 | slau you can have them all on a Down
  • 9:58 | slow have less sand more can have less
  • 10:00 | sand more sand you can hit different
  • 10:02 | shots there’s so many there’s so many
  • 10:04 | different things you can do in a bunker
  • 10:05 | so I quite like being in a bunker and
  • 10:06 | just um you know like messing around and
  • 10:08 | playing love
  • 10:13 | it so Tommy currently world ranking 13th
  • 10:17 | in the world we want to get to that
  • 10:19 | number one spot but where you are strong
  • 10:22 | is you putting and certainly long puts
  • 10:24 | right statistically strong long put in
  • 10:26 | and strong within five foot let’s have
  • 10:29 | to TI for lag putting long putting it’s
  • 10:31 | it’s a good one because when you’re sort
  • 10:34 | of stronger at some things other you you
  • 10:36 | don’t often like practice it or think
  • 10:39 | why think of like think that you’re
  • 10:40 | going to be uh well even even just go
  • 10:42 | through your process people will
  • 10:43 | probably pick up on something from that
  • 10:45 | yeah well I think number one thing that
  • 10:48 | I uh and my my kids don’t do this and
  • 10:50 | I’m always rattling it on and I’ll go
  • 10:52 | and watch them and I can see it straight
  • 10:53 | away is they don’t walk around the hole
  • 10:56 | like it’s it’s the most simple thing
  • 10:57 | like this one this part we actually set
  • 10:59 | up is is
  • 11:00 | uphill and you can see pretty much most
  • 11:02 | things because the puts fa in you but so
  • 11:04 | often I mean like doesn’t take much to
  • 11:07 | start walking to the side and have a
  • 11:10 | look and I think
  • 11:11 | people yeah like people might struggle
  • 11:13 | from this distance but I think also you
  • 11:16 | can hit a good Putt and hit it to 8 feet
  • 11:18 | and wonder like what happened there yeah
  • 11:20 | because you because you’ve almost not
  • 11:22 | assessed it you’ve not assessed it yeah
  • 11:24 | and it and it’s just W it’s just walking
  • 11:26 | around I would say the important thing
  • 11:28 | is to all always find you should always
  • 11:30 | walk around the put but also read the
  • 11:32 | put from where the you know where the
  • 11:33 | lowest where the put’s facing you yeah
  • 11:36 | uh I always think of it is like reading
  • 11:37 | a book I wouldn’t read a book like from
  • 11:39 | that way um so that that’s like that’s
  • 11:42 | that’s one of the first things make sure
  • 11:43 | you have a walk puts easiest to read
  • 11:46 | when it’s when it’s facing you and you
  • 11:47 | know what some some players are a bit
  • 11:49 | conscious about time and slowing up play
  • 11:52 | Etc obviously you’re you’re on tour and
  • 11:54 | it’s every single shot is outrageously
  • 11:56 | important but you know when a a good tip
  • 11:58 | for a lot of golfers when they can do it
  • 12:00 | is actually when you’re almost getting
  • 12:01 | onto the green yeah yeah yeah I actually
  • 12:03 | I think boogies maybe stop that
  • 12:05 | sometimes cuz you drive a boogie up and
  • 12:06 | then just get your club and walk to the
  • 12:07 | green but you can always be looking you
  • 12:09 | can always have a look and there’s a lot
  • 12:10 | of green actually over here but if we
  • 12:11 | were stood over here and we’ parked up
  • 12:13 | you can start to see the green might be
  • 12:16 | you know flowing that way there might be
  • 12:17 | an edge where it’s higher than the other
  • 12:19 | you know there there’s things that you
  • 12:20 | can always see and pick up and you start
  • 12:22 | to build just a picture of that pop
  • 12:24 | exactly you need to have an
  • 12:26 | understanding like say if you’re walking
  • 12:27 | up to the green or you’re getting put
  • 12:29 | her out your bag or whatever it is or
  • 12:30 | even if you were get saying hey all Lads
  • 12:32 | I’ll get the flag yeah I’ll go and get
  • 12:34 | the flag for everybody cuz that again is
  • 12:36 | an opportunity for playing at the
  • 12:38 | weekend you have a you have a chance to
  • 12:40 | be able to have a quick look at the PO I
  • 12:43 | do like that one so always read it from
  • 12:44 | the lows side yeah have a quick look
  • 12:46 | around when you get opportunity do and
  • 12:48 | then from that then what’s kind of how
  • 12:50 | how do you best judge the speed control
  • 12:53 | um like like I say when things come
  • 12:55 | naturally to you like it’s hard to it’s
  • 12:57 | hard to tell but one thing I would
  • 12:58 | always say is I’m always looking at the
  • 12:59 | put but I like to make sure that the
  • 13:02 | putter is is always moving I actually
  • 13:05 | only have one practice stroke but I
  • 13:08 | don’t spend long between that one
  • 13:10 | practice stroke where it’s um a
  • 13:12 | realistic hit at the put or rehearsal if
  • 13:14 | you like and then in and hit but I just
  • 13:16 | always think the putter should be moving
  • 13:18 | at a pretty constant like pace and rate
  • 13:22 | so then everything everything in your
  • 13:24 | stroke is similar there’s no big hit and
  • 13:27 | there’s no massive de de ation so that
  • 13:30 | whenever you’re having a feel for it the
  • 13:33 | putter is always in one kind of motion
  • 13:35 | so you have a decent assessment that
  • 13:38 | that motion there at that speed is going
  • 13:40 | to hit the P that far yeah yeah that’s a
  • 13:42 | good idea so it’s like it’s just having
  • 13:44 | those nice steady practice puts you ever
  • 13:47 | now when you’re doing your practice puts
  • 13:49 | there what what are you seeing in your
  • 13:51 | mind if we were to tap into the brain at
  • 13:52 | Tommy Fleetwood now on those practice
  • 13:54 | puts is there is there anything visual
  • 13:56 | you end up seeing um like I for a long
  • 13:59 | put I think you can be very now you’re
  • 14:02 | trying to hold the putt don’t get me
  • 14:03 | wrong like that’s the first try and hold
  • 14:05 | it but I very unspecific so I’ll have
  • 14:08 | some kind of start line somewhere or or
  • 14:11 | a point where I’m trying to aim at and
  • 14:13 | then the rest of it is I’m just looking
  • 14:14 | I’m kind of looking at the hole really
  • 14:18 | um but again you know we’re 45 ft away
  • 14:21 | here nearly 50 ft so I just want kind of
  • 14:25 | want to break it down as simple as
  • 14:26 | possible there’s so much space for the
  • 14:27 | ball to roll so I’ll have some a point
  • 14:29 | where I want to aim and then then let’s
  • 14:31 | the rest take over let’s just judge the
  • 14:33 | speed then and and you’ve got two things
  • 14:35 | to worry about and that’s it nice okay
  • 14:37 | so always read it from the low side have
  • 14:38 | a little bit of a look around have those
  • 14:40 | kind of look how how Tommy’s putter is
  • 14:42 | flowing and flowing look at nice look at
  • 14:46 | the
  • 14:47 | hole go in do

Block practice is the most important thing that most players don’t do because they don’t know what it is. All that set of that “set up” stuff that Mr. Fleetwood was talking about, is a part of block practice.

This series with Tommy has cost me $80. As I'll be putting $20 per major on him to win.

Good advice about Tommy. When I started walking around the hole, particularly looking at the putt from the other side of the hole, my putting improved dramatically. Thanks again,

Great instruction from a pro with real class. Thanks, Tommy, for the wonderful insights! Rick, when Tommy does achieve his two dream goals of winning The Open and being world number 1, which he will do soon, it might be time to add him to your staff. ???? It’s always a pleasure to watch you two battle it out. It would be great to see you guys play a round of best ball and see how low you can go.

Hi guys I have a framed authenticated poster of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus signatured masters cards. So photos of the two legends with the cards mounted and an authentication certificate. How much do you think this is worth?

Really educated video, and well appreciated… I also love bunker shots, but my putting is letting me down. I shot 89 today, the first time breaking 90, and if my putting improved, I would do it more often
